How to choose the right art size for a wall niche?
Keep at least 15 cm of clear space on all sides of a niche frame. Learn how to calculate the ideal art size and depth for drywall recesses.

Leave at least 15 cm of empty space on every side of the frame inside a wall recess so the artwork does not feel squeezed. Ideally, the frame should occupy between 60% and 75% of the niche's width and height. This margin preserves the niche's architectural depth and lets light fall naturally around the edges.

The formula is straightforward: subtract 30 cm from both the total width and total height of the recess. For instance, a recess measuring 80 by 120 cm comfortably accommodates a 50 by 90 cm frame, or a standard 50 by 70 cm piece leaving a slightly taller vertical border. Oversizing the piece turns the architectural feature into a narrow, dark crevice.
Consider the recess depth as well. Most drywall alcoves measure between 8 and 15 cm deep. A stretched cotton canvas on standard 2 to 4 cm stretcher bars, or a framed fine-art print in an ayous wood profile (typically 2 to 3 cm deep), will sit comfortably inside the recess plane without protruding into the room.

Secure the hanging hardware using hollow-wall drywall anchors rated for the combined weight of the print, plexiglass, and moulding. Explore our collection of ayous wood frames to find the exact dimensions suited to your alcove.
