What is the minimum distance between a frame and the baseboard?

Learn the minimum clearance needed between your frame and the baseboard for balanced walls and safe hanging.

What is the minimum distance between a frame and the baseboard?

The bottom edge of a hanging frame should sit at least 30 cm above the baseboard. This clearance protects the moulding from vacuum cleaners, shoes, and dust, while preventing the room from feeling bottom-heavy. The only regular exception is leaning an oversized piece directly on the floor as an intentional display choice.

Standard gallery installation places the midpoint of an artwork at eye level, exactly 145 cm from the floor. With large formats such as 70x100 cm or 100x140 cm, the lower rail naturally drops lower. As long as you maintain a 30 to 40 cm gap above the baseboard, the piece remains visually grounded and safe.

When an oversized canvas or poster pushes the bottom edge closer than 30 cm to the trim, elevate the hanging point slightly or set the frame on the floor. Sturdy ayous wood mouldings lean comfortably against the wall at a 5-degree tilt without requiring wall anchors.

gall.art crafts solid ayous frames with lightweight acrylic glass, offering both durability and protection for high-traffic or lower wall zones. Find standard and bespoke frame profiles designed for lasting gallery display.
